KNOWING THE ELECTRICITY MARKET TO ACCELERATE DECARBONISATION: EF SOLARE SPONSORS THE ELECTRICITY MARKET REPORT BY ENERGY & STRATEGY GROUP

EF Solare is committed to supporting research that helps analyse the sector’s status, achievements, and growth margins. The Group wants to take a closer look at the development of renewables, aware that the current global scenario requires an urgent change of direction and increasingly concrete and decisive support for the growth of solar energy.

To gain greater awareness of the energy market, which is necessary to contribute to decarbonization, we have decided to support the Energy&Strategy group of the Politecnico di Milano – School of Management again this year by sponsoring the sixth edition of the Electricity Market Report.

An updated picture of the evolutionary trajectories of the electricity system has been provided during the presentation of the report. Through the report, it was possible to reflect on the current challenges, examining from a regulatory and technological point of view the elements enabling the evolution of the market.

Storage systems were broadly discussed. In Italy, at the end of 2021, more than 75,000 storage units were connected to the grid. A growth of 130% compared to 2020. This growth trend is even more evident in 2022: in the first half of the year, about 47,000 storage systems were installed, 33% more than in 2021. These systems were almost exclusively residential, with a predominance of lithium-ion technology. As for utility-scale storage systems, we report 250 MW of capacity awarded in Terna’s auction for the Fast reserve service and 1.1 GW electrochemical storage awarded in the 2024 Capacity market auctions. National targets are ambitious for both segments (residential and utility-scale): the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) envisages 6 GW of centralized storage and 4 GW of distributed storage by 2030.

“Today, the main barriers to investment in storage systems are technology costs and uncertainty about the potential revenues generated in an evolving market. After a downward phase, costs plateaued in 2021 and a reversal of the trend is feared this year. As far as revenues are concerned, it will be of great importance to have a regulatory intervention aimed at defining a clear, stable, and enabling regulatory framework”, commented Raffaele Pizzorusso, Head of Energy Management at EF Solare.

The Electricity Market Report also analyses the instruments allowing the direct involvement of citizens and businesses, such as energy communities and collective self-consumption. In this area, there are ongoing regulatory developments. Support tools will be made available at the central level (EUR 2.2 billion are earmarked in the PNRR for the installation of 2 GW of renewable plants in these configurations), and at the local level (14 regions have issued regional measures). To unlock the potential of these instruments, it is crucial to quickly complete a clear and enabling regulatory framework.

” At EF Solare, we believe that being aware of the electricity market’s issues is essential in order to track a continuous growth. Thanks to the daily commitment of our teams, this knowledge helps us achieve increasingly ambitious goals towards a sustainable future” concludes Ettore Acampora, Head of Business Development & Energy Management at EF Solare.
