“PHOTOVOLTAIC: THE FUTURE IS FURTHER GROWTH”: A VISION FOR THE INDUSTRY AT EF SOLARE ITALIA ANNUAL SUMMIT
“Photovoltaic: the future is further growth”: this is the topic on which EF Solare Italia decided to focus its annual summit for 2018. A choice born out of the awareness that the industry and its operators have entered a crucial phase: Italy, Europe and many Countries in the world have indeed decided to centre their energy strategies around an ambitious growth of power generation from renewables, to reduce carbon emission and challenge climate change.
Already in 2017 the new installation of photovoltaic capacity, with 99 GW around the world, have surpassed for the first time those of conventional sources (84 GW), a growth destined to keep on in the next future, reaching 1 TW of total global installed capacity in 2022, according to the mid-scenario of Solar Power Europe’s Global Market Outlook 2018 -2022.
To face this important challenge and field a sustainable growth in the desired timespans, the operators will have to look for new services aimed the electric market, digitalization, storage, boosting up existing plants, new plants in grid parity regime and internationalization. To discuss these topics, EF Solare Italia gathered institutions, operators and industry experts.
During the welcome greetings, Roberto Moneta, CEO of GSE, launched an appeal for the whole industry to work together for a deep renovation of the Italian electric system, while Diego Percopo, CEO of EF Solare Italia, remarked how the photovoltaic market has experienced a steady growth despite the fluctuation of investment volumes through the years.
Many interesting insights emerged from the various lectures. Luca Barberis, Director of Sustainable Development Department of GSE, focused on the need for a both qualitative and quantitative growth; Michael Schmela, Executive Advisor and Head of Market Intelligence of SolarPower Europe, pointed at growth forecast larger than previously expected in the next few years, thanks to the decrease of photovoltaic LCOE, that makes solar power more and more competitive. Alessandro Marangoni, CEO of Althesys, painted a market scenario for Italy, noticing an intense M&A activity, the entrance of new players and the return of old ones; Fabio Bulgarelli, Head of Regulatory Affairs Terna, pointed out how the demand covered by fossil fuels has decreased to the advantage of renewable sources, so much that these will be able, in the future, to fully cover the demand during daylight.
Through the panel, moderated by Enrico Cisnetto, Diego Percopo; Stefano Cavriani, Market Director of Ego Group; Davide Chiaroni, Vice Director of Energy&Strategy Group and Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano; Giuseppe Moro, Founder and CEO of Convert Italia and Guido Tonelli, Professor at University of Pisa, discussed various topics, from the importance of economies of scale to storage potential to new technologies such as solar tracking, to a retrospective of photovoltaic history.
